more pets...

Well, I guess you can call them that...
Nolan and McKenna got hermit crabs with their Christmas money from Grandma and Grandpa, and Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa (the crabs themselves were inexpensive, but they sure do need a lot of stuff!). Their shells came painted, so the kids went to the store and chose the ones they wanted (although I think they've switched a few times already, so they are community crabs at this point). I had to read all about what we needed for them, and all about them in general...did you know that hermit crabs can climb? I did not! But then after about an hour at home, we saw it first-hand! The picture on the middle right is of the crab climbing down (yes, he's upside down) from the top of the little tree we got for them to climb. And when we have them out walking on the table, they get to the edge and do a "dive and tuck" maneuver...I figured they would at least stop at the edge, but they kind of just keep going and once they realize they're no longer on terra firma, they tuck into their shell. That's some kind of faith (or stupidity...) The kids like them, but we didn't necessarily know that they are nocturnal when we got them, so we have to take them out of the tank (wake them up) to see any action. Oh well, they're pretty cool anyway (and pretty low maintenance for mommy). Oh-and another fun fact...they can live to be 20 years old...good thing the tank can be packed and taken to college!
